The presentation and the outcome of penetrating abdominal bullet injuries – Iraqi hospital based study

Background: In Iraq penetrating injuries to the abdomen caused by firearm are more common than stab wounds with remarkable mortality and morbidity. Early recognition of immediate treatment mandatory in saving lives many those patients.
 Objective: To review presentation evaluate early post-operative morbidity abdominal bullet Baghdad teaching hospital.
 Patients Methods: This prospective study was conducted on 132 patients admitted second surgical unit hospital after sustaining injury during time period one year from October 2013 September 2014.
 Results: The most vulnerable age group involved, between 21-30 years comprised 71.2% total. Male female ratio 43:1(male 97.73%). It observed that majority injured were military personnel (83%), associated high velocity missiles (81%). seen 96.6% had positive findings laparotomy; small intestine involved 42.6% followed large 35.65%, then liver 20.86%. Majority involvement two organs (42%), organ (28%). major postoperative complications wound infection (28.6%), chest (24.4%). cause death septicaemia 80%. 
 Conclusion: Explorative laparotomy continues be accurate method used diagnose presence intra-abdominal a negative rate 3.4%. tended related number injuries; rates site infections found chief 48 hours. Hospital stays our prolonged comparison other developed countries.
